Folkestone and Hythe

The District of Folkestone and Hythe is situated on the channel coast about 75 miles from London. The district has an area of 140 sq miles (35,700 hectares) and has a natural, high quality environment with a number of distinct landscapes, communities and places of interest.

The council employs approximately 380 staff across its services. Its responsibilities include waste services, coastal management, social housing, homelessness prevention, business and event licensing, environmental health, building control and development planning. The council also manages Hythe swimming pool, an open-air sports facility, and several parks within the district.

More than a third of the district falls within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the southern part forms the Romney Marsh.  There is a wealth of notable heritage spanning the whole of British history including Iron Age and Roman settlements; medieval churches; Tudor castles and Napoleonic fortifications. The district also has a National Nature Reserve at Dungeness, many sites of Special Scientific Interest, Ancient Woodlands, Heritage Coast at the East Cliff and Warren and Local Nature Reserves.
